Renters insurance · Houston

Houston renters insurance proof before move-in day.

Most renters land here when a property manager has asked for proof of insurance and pinned a date to it. Send the lease page with the requirement and any limit or additional-interest wording, and the office reads what's actually being asked before you buy a thing.

Key facts

What your lease may ask for

Three things a property manager looks for.

Your lease or resident portal usually spells these out. Read what it's actually requiring before you buy anything, so the proof matches the request.

  1. Proof of insurance

A document showing you have a policy, often wanted before move-in, renewal or key pickup.

Check: What is the deadline, and where does the proof go?

  2. Liability limit

Liability covers injury or damage you're responsible for. A lease may name a minimum.

Check: Does your lease name a minimum limit?

  3. Additional interest

The property manager gets notified about the policy if it lapses, cancels or changes, without becoming insured under it.

Check: Does the lease give exact wording, or a name and address to list?

Coverage still depends on eligibility, policy terms, and selected limits. The Houston office can explain what the request is asking for.

What are my things worth?

Enter a rough value for each group: what it would cost to buy today rather than what you paid. Nothing is saved or sent.

Rough value of what you own
  • Bed, sofa, tables, chairs, shelves

  • TV, computer, phone, game console

  • Everything in your closet and drawers

  • Cookware, dishes, small appliances

  • Sheets, towels, curtains, rugs

  • Books, decor, sports gear, tools

If you rent in Houston

Flood is its own policy, and renters can buy it.

Standard renters policies exclude flood damage, including rising water from storms, bayous and storm surge. Renters can buy flood coverage for their belongings. The landlord's insurance covers the building, never your belongings. A low-risk zone is not the all-clear either: more than half of paid Harris County flood claims sat outside the high-risk zone, so a ground-floor unit or a packed storage closet is worth a separate look.

How it works

From your lease to a clear answer in three steps.

  1. Send the lease page

Call, or text a photo of the page with the requirement. Add the deadline, any liability limit and any additional-interest wording.

  2. Review it together

The office reads what's being asked, then goes through personal property, liability and loss of use. Auto, roommates, pets, storage or flood questions can come up too.

  3. Decide

Choose your coverage with the numbers in front of you. Coverage depends on eligibility, policy terms and selected limits. If you'd rather think it over, that's fine too.

What to send before the call

  • Lease address, move-in or renewal date, property manager instructions, and deadline
  • Any required liability limit or additional-interest wording from the lease
  • Current auto policy information if you want to discuss bundling
  • Questions about roommates, valuable belongings, pets, storage, or flood concerns
